Why Write? Shawn Speaks

Shawn Overstreet Weisser is a wife and mother before all else, as well as a teacher, librarian, historian, and writer... She shares her thoughts on the importance of writing.

Why is writing so important for young adults?
Writing is important for young adults because it allows them to have an outlet for ideas, emotions, and creativity. It also provides them with a source of validation.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were a tween or teen?
I wish I had the knowledge I could write and I was good. A little self-esteem and support from family goes a long way. I also wish I had learned the word "that" was a four letter word to be avoided.

How has the ability to express yourself helped you in life?
Writing has given me an outlet for my sorrows and joys. The emotions that might be crippling are expressed in stories and essays. I am able to assess my life and apply what I learn to the decisions I make. It has also provided me with a fan base in my family and my daughter thinks I am so cool.
